Things to Do in Hayling Island: Beaches, Eats & Hidden Coves
Planning a seaside escape on the south coast? Perhaps you’re considering a holiday in Hampshire. Well, Hayling Island offers a brilliant holiday destination option.
This prime beachside location serves up classic bucket-and-spade fun with a few delightful surprises most won’t tell you about (don’t worry, we’ll share all the juicy top tips!). Holidaying here can include trips to wildlife-rich coves, family amusements, gentle cycling trails and cosy places to eat and watch the world go by.
This guide pulls together the best things to do in Hayling Island if you’re staying at (or considering) booking a getaway at Meadow Bay’s Hayling Island Holiday Park. We’ve made sure to include toddler-friendly ideas, dog-walk tips and rainy-day backups, too.
Hayling Island Beaches: Find Your Perfect Stretch of Shore

Hayling’s shoreline runs for miles along the Solent, with shingle-and-sand beaches and big-sky views towards the Isle of Wight – great for kite flying, paddling and pebble hunting.
The island is famed for clean water and long, walkable seafronts, with over three miles of beach facing the Solent and more around Langstone and Chichester Harbours.
Eastoke & Beachlands (family hub).
This is your classic seaside scene: arcades and funfair nearby, lifeguard-patrolled zones in season, and easy access to cafés and loos so no one has to take a piddle in the sea!
Families love hopping aboard the Hayling Seaside Railway between Eastoke Corner and Beachlands for a short, kid-pleasing ride with sea views. Trains typically run at weekends year-round and daily in school holidays (weather permitting).
West Hayling (quiet coves & wildlife).
Drift west for a calmer feel. Boardwalk paths and the coastal trail edge the nature reserve and Langstone Harbour. Bring your binoculars and see if you can spot waders and wintering geese – It’s one of the richest wildlife harbours in the UK.
Sandy Point (wild and windswept).
Right at the south-eastern tip of Hayling Island, you’ll find shingle, dunes and huge open skies. The Sandy Point Nature Reserve itself has been closed in recent years to protect fragile habitats, but you can enjoy the beach beside it and admire the gorgeous views on a sunny day.
Good to know (dogs & little legs): Seasonal rules apply on the main seafront – between 1st May and 30th September, dogs must be on leads on the beach or promenade. For tiny explorers, stick to firm-path sections of the promenade or the Billy Trail. The main promenade near Hayling Island Holiday Park is well-suited to everyone – perfect for the whole clan
Easy Adventures: Cycle Paths, Miniature Trains & Island Ferries
Ride the Hayling Billy Trail. Following a former railway along the island’s west coast, the Billy is a flat, off-road favourite for scooters, bikes and pushchairs. A popular family section runs out-and-back with harbour views, and the classic cycle route is around five miles and almost entirely traffic-free.
Hop on the Hayling Seaside Railway. Short legs love this! The narrow-gauge line links Beachlands and Eastoke Corner, with departures at regular intervals – perfect as a treat between beach stops if you choose to explore what both beaches have to offer.
Sail across on the Hayling Ferry. For a fun half-day, you can cruise from Hayling’s Ferry Point to Eastney in Portsmouth. The passenger ferry runs year-round, carries bikes for free, and drops you near Southsea’s seafront, which offers even more stuff to occupy the kids, such as aquariums, parks and amusement piers.
Our Top Pick of Hayling Island Attractions for Families
Funland Amusement Park (Beachlands).
Classic seaside thrills: mini-golf, an indoor arcade and plenty of places to grab a bite. The park offers rides covering tots to teens, plus they host seasonal events. It’s ideal when you want to keep the family entertained for a few hours or as a reward after a long beach walk.
Hayling Light Railway (heritage rides).
We know we’ve already mentioned this one, but it’s worth noting! This cheerful little line doubles as transport between two lively beach hubs, so you can stitch together a car-free day out with ease. Truly a family favourite of guests who stay with us.
Wildlife Watching.
Head to the old Oysterbeds on the north-west shoreline, where paths skirt lagoons teeming with birdlife. Hayling Island holiday goers come here to watch for brent geese in winter and terns in summer, and don’t forget a little crab pool fishing – grab your nets and buckets from the on-park shop before you head out!
Hidden Coves & Nature Nooks (bring your camera!)

West Hayling Local Nature Reserve.
Follow the shore and you’ll discover quiet inlets, saltmarsh scent and driftwood-strewn shingle. It’s a peaceful, pram-friendly wander when you want the sea without the crowds. A true hidden gem worth including in your holiday itinerary (You didn’t hear it from us!).
Sandy Point’s edge.
Instagram worthy this one! The beaches at this end of Hayling Island offer gorgeous wild Solent panoramas and a sense of big, open coast. This one is a favourite among couples on romantic breaks looking for a perfect golden-hour stroll – take a romantic sunset stroll, then join us for bingo or free evening entertainment, or grab 10 to relax in your hot tub (our Platinum accommodation options offer private hot tubs).
Top tip:
Pack a thermos and perch on a beach rock wall or promenade bench to watch kite-surfers dancing across the chop of the ocean if the breeze is up.

Seafront bites.
Around Eastoke and Beachlands you’ll find cafés, kiosks and ice-cream stops for casual lunches between sandcastle sessions – ideal if Funland or the mini railway are on your plan for the day out.
Picnic-perfect spots
Who doesn’t love a good picnic? The promenade lawns near Eastoke and the quieter corners toward West Hayling are lovely for relaxing on a picnic rug or pebble-skimming, with paths that are friendly to pushchairs and tired little legs, and tired grown up legs!

Some Practical Pointers (so your break runs smoothly)
Parking & facilities.
Seafront car parks dot the whole promenade, with loos, cafés and play areas popping up at intervals. Ask at reception for up-to-date local parking information and charges.
Buggy-friendly paths.
The promenade and large chunks of the Billy Trail are pushchair-friendly, giving you a stress-free circuit for naps on the move. After all, no one likes trekking up a cliffside with a pushchair!
Wildlife etiquette.
Keep to marked paths around reserves, especially at West Hayling and the Oysterbeds, so birds can feed and rest. It’s their space too.
