South Downs Walks for All the Family
Hayling Island Billy Trail
When seeking a South Downs walk in proximity to our Hayling Island park, the Hayling Billy Trail is the ideal option for all the family. Situated on the west coast of the island, the trail follows the bed of the original Victorian railway line, which connected the island to mainland England.
Hayling Billy trail is firmly cemented as one of the best South Downs walks for accessibility, as following the old railway bed ensures a flat, easy-going walk, which acts almost as a rural promenade through nature, making the trail accessible for families, dog-walkers and cyclists.
Perfect for a tranquil summer’s day, the Hayling Billy trail sweeps alongside the glimmering water of Langstone Harbour, where visitors are treated to a habitat for wading birds.
The Hayling Billy Trail is around 5km/3.1 miles in length, featuring well-surfaced paths and flat ground, making it suitable for pushchairs.
Farlington Marshes
When seeking a unique and wild walk, Farlington Marshes is one of Hampshire’s oldest nature reserves, offering one of the best South Downs walks around. The marsh is situated upon a peninsula of grasslands and lagoons that juts out into Langstone Harbour, offering scenic views of the surrounding water.
The main event is the 2.5 mile circular sea wall walk, which helps position the marshes atop the list of best South Downs walks for many. Featuring a raised gravel path, the trail sandwiches visitors between the glimmering waters of Langstone Harbour on one side, and the teeming grassy wetlands of Farlington Marshes on the other.
Ideal for wildlife enthusiasts, the marsh is a habitat for a multitude of birds, as in the winter, it is home to dark-bellied Brent Geese, whilst in the summer, butterflies and songbirds float dreamily about the tall grasses.
Not only are the marshes teeming with wildlife, but also with history, as the site is littered with bunkers from the Second World War. Once used as a decoy site, the marshes were set on fire during the blitz, in an attempt to fool German bombers into dropping their payloads upon the marsh, rather than the vitally important Portsmouth Dockyards.
When seeking out South Downs walks with dogs, Farlington Marsh features highly accessible paths that are ideal for families or those with four-legged friends (just be sure to keep them on a lead to protect the local birdlife!).
Around 4.3km/2.7 miles in length, Farlington Marsh is a circular walk with on-site parking, meaning completing the route is a breeze.
Staunton Country Park
Staunton Country Park is a jewel amongst the South Downs walks, transporting visitors back hundreds of years to the grounds of an old English country home. Positioned only 20 minutes north of Hayling Island, the park is a tapestry, woven from ancient woodlands, serene lakes and expansive green space.
Originally formed during the 19th century, Staunton Country Park was once home to an old English country home of the same name. Originally constructed as a gothic-style mansion during the 1860s, the historic home stood strong for nearly 100 years, before being demolished in 1959 due to disrepair.
Whilst the mansion may have gone, the footprint it created remains, as the park features oddities left behind as a reminder of what once was, including the Beacon and the Shell House. Immerse yourself in Victorian splendour with a stroll by the lake, or lose yourself and escape the hustle and bustle of the world with a wander into Havant Thicket, a dense canopy of trees plucked straight from a fairytale.
When creating a list of the best South Downs walks with dogs, Staunton Country Park is a must-visit, with accessible on-site parking and plentiful open spaces for four-legged friends to roam.
What positions Staunton Country Park so clearly as one of the best South Downs walks is the ability to adapt and customise your length of walk at the park. Featuring on-site parking and multiple paths to follow, some choose to walk the entire park as a loop, whilst others choose a shorter route. The decision is all yours.
A full circuit of the park is around 1.4km/0.9 miles; this can be increased or decreased based on the route taken within the park.
